Natural Child Photo Tips #4

I hope you all had a fabulous holiday season. Here’s a photo tip for the new year:

Special Occasions

Special occasions, for an obsessive documenter, can make us (okay, I’m talking about myself here) a little crazy. It can feel like a huge sense of responsibility to capture the important moments perfectly!

The trick is to keep those wedding, recital, or birthday party photos light – as in the mood.  I find the most memorable shots are of the planning, rehearsing and getting ready – when your kids are not posing and apprehensive.  Think of yourself as a fly on the wall, nonchalantly snapping away, quietly.  Be open to shooting the goofy mishaps and serious moments, as well.

By the way, if you see Great Aunt Sadie give little Rachel a kiss on the cheek, and you missed it, it’s completely fine to say “Could you just do that again?”  It still counts as spontaneous in my book!

The first two shots are of a flower girl, before a wedding.  She was waiting outside the door patiently for her grandmother (the bride).  Then, she couldn’t wait any longer and peeked in.  The next one is them peeking out together.  I just followed the girl to that spot because the natural light was so beautiful on her.  Then I just stayed open to see what might unfold…

The last shot is of my daughter’s first ballet class ever – taken with a little point and shoot.  She had been waiting her entire life to be old enough to attend.  This is her first moment, soaking it all in.

Some of the most beautiful things in life are utterly imperfect.  Revel in the uniqueness.

Warm, fuzzy, New Year wishes,

Kelly
